Ibiza is famous for its clubbing but there is definitely a lot more to this party island. There are magical hidden beaches, mysterious rock formations and an ancient town overflowing with traditional Spanish charm. Let me show you my top 3 highlights and guide you how to reach these well hidden spots.
#1 Es Vedra
One of the most mysterious spots in Ibiza is definitely the area around Sa Pedrera and Atlantis on the western coast. In front of the coast there is a mysterious uninhabited rocky island called Es Vedra. It is part of the Cala d’Hort nature reserve and it is said to be the third most magnetic spot in the world. Put it to the test and you’ll agree. As you can imagine, many stories and myths are being told about this Es Vedra island. Whatever the story, the Es Vedra viewpoint is a must see and great sunset spot. I’ll describe how to get there below.
#2 Atlantis
Close to Cala d’Hort and Es Vedra viewpoint you will also find the hidden treasure of Atlantis. Atlantis is a mysterious set of rock formations by the water, showing traces of hewn-out stones. Once upon a time these rocks were cut out in order to build the Eivissa / Ibiza town walls. In the course of time, these cut-out stones became natural pools filled with turquoise water.
To get to this breathtaking cove and secluded beach you will need to do a challenging hike. The journey to Atlantis is not easy as you’ll start with a steep descent, which you will have to endure for 30-40 minutes. Make sure you have good hiking shoes, sunscreen and plenty of water. I assure you it is worth every step, once down it was one of the most amazing and rewarding views I had ever seen.
How to get there? Go to the ‘Sa Pedrera’ or ‘Atlantis’ viewpoint or put ‘Apartment Es Vedra’ in your GPS (Waze knows). You will find it while driving in the direction of Es Cubells and only then to Cala d’Hort. At the dirt road, park your car next to the road. Then, go straight for a short walk if you want to go to the Es Vedra viewpoint. For Atlantis, go left and prepare for a steep down hike. I enjoyed combining both, first the hike to Atlantis and then gathering for the sunset at Es Vedra.
#3 Ibiza town
Right above Ibiza town is one of the island most iconic landmarks Dalt Vila. Dalt Vila is Ibiza’s fortified town, its walls marking the oldest part of the town. The fort walls constructed out of the Atlantis’ sandstone cliffs were built in the 16th century to protect the town from invaders. The place, now an UNESCO World Heritage site, breathes history and is an impressive place to visit. Dalt Vila is also the place where you will easily get lost in the narrow cobbled streets. Don’t forget to enjoy the many fantastic viewpoints and pass by one of many restaurants, boutiques or art galleries. Especially the Plaça de Vila is a great location with great food and atmosphere (e.g. Sa Rosado, El Olivo Mio,…).
